Name of the Doctor Speculation [SPOILERS]

This post concerns speculation and roumer surrounding the series 7 finale, The Name of the Doctor. As such some of the things I mention may be considered SPOILERS and may turn out to be plot points in the episode – I may also be completely wrong of course.

So here goes.

Firstly let’s take a look at this image released today by doctorwho.tv

NotD Still - Sixie

It’s Clara in the TARDIS with a figure behind her. But who is it? To many it seems like the figure of Colin Baker’s sixth Doctor. Even though the figure is predominantly in darkness, the evidence that points to this is the multi coloured look of the costume and also the shape and style of the hair which is backlit.

Could this be Colin Baker’s Doctor?

Jenna-Louise Coleman offers some hints in an interview with the Radio Times where she says…

In the beginning we see a Clara in the 60s, 70s and the 80s so there are a lot of costume changes, which I love. Always one for a bit of dressing up, me. Love a red carpet.”

She also goes on to say that,

… we finally understand why the Doctor has met Clara so many different times.”

Coleman has already stated that the Doctor has “met Clara more than three times in the past”, could Clara have met the Doctor’s previous incarnations as well?

There is yet more evidence that points in this direction, and really if you want to avoid possible spoilers stop reading now.

This image surfaced on Twitter on May 12th.

The first image is a screen-cap from The Name of the Doctor TV trailer and the second is screen-cap from The Five Doctors.

Two things are interesting from this comparison. Firstly is the appearance of Bessie, the third Doctor’s car in the Name of the Doctor Trailer secondly the background of that image with Clara in it is identical to the cap from The Five Doctors.

I needed to do a bit of investigation myself and so dug out my DVD copy of The Five Doctors.

My discoveries have formulated a theory in my brain which I will expound in a moment, firstly take a close look at the few images below.

Composite 1 Composite 2

The first one is basically the same one as what I found on Twitter, but with a better pause-frame to examine the similarities – and they are identical. The second shows the tree again in the scene as the Doctor drives away from the time-scoop it can be seen in the background and the side mirror.

So let’s just accept for a moment that this is fact – that in The Name of the Doctor Clara visits this moment in the Doctor’s past. How does it work, both story wise and production wise.

The shot of the tree that appears to be used in the trailer clip is most likely taken from a still from The Five Doctor because the shot it is taken from is not locked-off, it is a POV shot with lots of movement – whereas in the trailer it is locked-off.

But why is Bessie in the shot? She isn’t in the original clip like that? My theory is that this is when the Doctor is turning around, doing a u-turn to evade the time-scoop.

Screen Shot 2013-05-14 at 5.18.12 PMTake a look at this mock-up I’ve made of the location to the right. (Don’t judge on the rudiment-ality)

The green pentagon is the patch of trees, the yellow rectangle and line represent Bessie and where she moves in the scene. The blue dot is where Clara appears to be standing.

So the clip form the Trailer shows the moment as Jon Pertwee and Bessie do the U-Turn, and Clara is standing there as Bessie goes past.

So does this mean she was there the whole time?

How does it all fit in together?

Well, my theory is that Clara is going back through time, warning and saving the Doctor, perhaps even altering past events.

And there is the connection with the still of the sixth Doctor and this clip from the trailer.

There’s also another piece of evidence which hints towards these theories being correct. A couple of weeks back I read this article on Doctor Who TV, at the time I poo-pooed it, that was never going to happen. But now it looks like it has. Modern actors have been placed in old Doctor Who stories, and seemingly old actors in new shots. The only thing they got wrong was that it was to be for the series finale not the 50th… although maybe it will be for both!

Surely this can only be a good thing…

UPDATE:

All but confirmation of the above as the BBC have released a small number of new images including another of Clara and the third Doctor.

NotD CAP !!!

WOW!!! All I can say…
