Doctor Who Day: Nightmare in Silver

The Cybermen are back as Doctor Who reaches its penultimate episode this weekend! The Doctor is joined by Clara as well as Artie and Angie for this eagerly awaited episode written by the acclaimed Neil Gaiman, the man responsible for 2011’s The Doctor’s Wife – an instant fan favourite.

The episode took a later timeslot of 7.00 for its BBC One debut over in the UK, maybe this hints at a darker tone to the story…Around the world it will debut on the same in America on BBC America at 8:00pm ET and the same time on SPACE in Canada. The ABC broadcast will be at 7.30pm on the next day, Sunday the 12th of May. The episode will be available to watch on the BBC’s iPlayer service and the ABC’s iView soon after the episode airs.

The Synopsis for the episode is:

Hedgewick’s World Of Wonders was once the greatest theme park in the galaxy, but it’s now the dilapidated home to a shabby showman, a chess-playing dwarf and a dysfunctional army platoon. When the Doctor, Clara, Artie and Angie arrive, the last thing they expect is the re-emergence of one of the Doctor’s oldest foes. The Cybermen are back!

Neil Gaiman’s credentials as a bonafide Doctor Who writer are written all over his work, there is a clear science fiction element as well as the fantasy, and that’s certainly what The Doctor’s Wife brought to the table. The way that episode was written was quite dissimilar to the rest of Who-canon, mainly because Gaiman approaches the show from the stance of a Fantasy author.

That’s not to say it isn’t essentially still Doctor Who. Quite the opposite, Gaiman writes in a very true, very original style.

I expect this episode to be even more Fantasy driven than The Doctor’s Wife, I expect it to be vast and romp like. Yet Gaiman has also promised scares, and I think he will deliver. The Cybermen will be scary again after this story.

Also, expect a cliff-hanger, as with last week, Moffat loves leaving an episode hanging with a cliff-hanger, even if it is a small one. And be sure to check back here after the episode to watch the new Prequel for The Name of the Doctor.

Enjoy the episode!
